Understanding How AI Search Engines Rank Content

Bottom line: AI search engines don’t “rank” content the way Google’s PageRank algorithm does. Instead, they run a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipeline: convert the user’s query and candidate documents into vector embeddings, retrieve the most semantically relevant passages using similarity search, then have a large language model (LLM) synthesize an answer grounded in those passages — typically citing only one to three sources. Google’s classic ranking algorithm rewards a broad basket of signals including backlinks and engagement metrics that have little to do with whether a model can cleanly extract a fact from the page. A page can rank well under that broad basket and still fail the much narrower test of “can an LLM isolate one clear claim from this passage.”

The Role of Google’s Core Index in AI Overviews Specifically

Google AI Overviews are somewhat different from Perplexity or ChatGPT’s browsing mode: they draw primarily from Google’s existing search index and ranking signals rather than an independent retrieval system. This means traditional technical SEO — crawlability, indexation, core ranking factors — functions as a prerequisite filter before a page can even be considered for an Overview citation, with schema and extractability determining whether it’s actually used once retrieved.
